The Truth About Ceramic Coatings

What is ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating is a clear, semi-permanent, hydrophobic, protective layer that chemically bonds with your vehicle’s clear coat. It is applied as a liquid and when fully cured it has a smooth, glossy finish.

Ceramic coatings are scratch proof. FALSE

The biggest myth about ceramic coatings is that they are scratch proof. Ceramic coatings do not protect your vehicle from scratches or rock chips. They do provide a hydrophobic layer that repels water and prevents airborne contaminants from baking into your vehicle’s clear coat. Ceramic coatings act as a sacrificial layer, protecting your vehicle’s paint from UV rays which can cause fading and oxidation.

Ceramic coatings are a one-time solution; the vehicle won’t get dirty anymore and won’t need to be washed. FALSE
While it may be true that your vehicle will not get as dirty as before, it is still important to keep up with routine maintenance washes. We recommend ceramic coating maintenance washes at least once a month. These hand washes will remove the buildup of contaminants that have landed on the ceramic coating, which will help maintain the hydrophobic properties and increase the longevity of the ceramic coating.
Drive through car washes are not an option if your vehicle has a ceramic coating. The abrasive, spinning brushes will cause severe swirling and scratches on the coating. While touchless washes may eliminate the hazards of swirl marks and scratches, the harsh chemicals will drastically reduce the lifetime of the coating. Having your vehicle hand washed by a professional auto detailer will extend the longevity of your ceramic coating for as long as possible.

Ceramic coatings permanently bond to the clear coat so that means it will last forever. FALSE

Ceramic coatings form a semi-permanent chemical bond with your vehicle’s clear coat. Most ceramic coatings last anywhere from 2-5 years. We offer both a 2-3 year coating and a 5+ year coating. Over time, the coating will inevitably wear off, even with proper maintenance.
